This City Of Ours J Willis Sayre 9781258380717 Books Reviews
I love this book! A valuable piece of history, this is a small school book about the history of Seattle. It contains numerous old photos, and many interesting anecdotes about the city and its people. One of the most fascinating sections, for me, is at the back of the book. There's a page that specifies the right and wrong ways to spell and say certain things. For example, you don't call someone a "pioneer" unless this person lived in the city or state before November 11, 1889. You don't say the STRAITS of Juan de Fuca. It is the STRAIT of Juan de Fuca. You don't say Al-kai Point, you say Al-key Point. Current Seattle residents will recognize that, despite the lessons in this section, some pronunciations are today "wrong" and you would receive a scolding from a teacher in a 1936 classroom when this book was still in use. All in all, this book is an important piece of Seattle's history.
